Initially I thought photographically demonstrating growth would be challenging. I contemplated a series of flowers from bud to bloom; babies progressing through the stages to toddlers; and puppies becoming dogs…
But with the Olympics in the background, I was inspired by personal growth… athletes challenging themselves to be the best. Youth reaching heights others can only dream of. That, and a trip to the Millarville Rodeo this weekend gave me the weekly photo challenge material.
I know rodeo is controversial to many. Some of you know I’m an avid animal lover (3 adopted cats, 2 adopted dogs & heavy involvement with horses). I’ve been behind the scenes of several rodeos and have yet to see an abused or mistreated animal. (My daughter spent about 5 minutes nuzzling one of the saddle broncs on Saturday – the big lovebug!)
The cowboys and cowgirls have the utmost respect for the livestock. The animals put in their 8-30 seconds of hard work and are usually done for the day – heading back to the barn for bed, bath and feeding. Many of the horses are ‘off-the-track’ rescues who would otherwise be heading to a meat truck – or left in a field and ignored. Sadly they’re a major reason there are so many equine rescue facilities out there.
I took a few hundred photos this weekend, but the event that struck me closest to the heart was the lone novice bull rider. This young man gave it his all – on a young bull that also seemed to be giving it his all. Despite bucks and spins worthy of his much more experienced counterparts, he landed on his feet and walked away with a tad more experience under his belt.
Without experience there is no growth…
